Massive Dimension -

Here we are at the end of another calendar year, and as usual, we would like to take a minute to look back, reflect, recap and share with our readers some of the highlights from the past twelve months.  Of course, no year in review would be complete without a mention of the pandemic that has become a fixture in all of our lives. As a COVID precaution, at the beginning of 2021, our team was fragmented, working full or part-time from home with engineers coming into work in shifts to try to minimize exposure. Like almost everyone had to,...

Experiments, Filabot, Massive Dimension -

The end of October is upon us, and all of us here at Massive Dimension (and Filabot) would like to wish you a very happy (and spooky) Halloween! Hopefully, you have a big pile of candy and a most excellent costume to celebrate the 31st with- have you carved any pumpkins?  Rather than break out the carving knives, we thought we would put our 3D printers to use and see if we couldn’t print a suitable spooky pumpkin! We ended up pulling a nice looking model from Thingiverse, “Vampire Pumpkin New” by user justinds89 (thanks Justin!), sliced it in Cura, and had...

Massive Dimension, MDPH2 -

The Massive Dimension team is back from our trip to Fabtech 2021, the biggest fabrication convention of the year, held in Chicago. We had a blast, made all sorts of new friends, were inspired by technological innovations, and showed off our own hardware as well! It was an incredible event and one that we are glad to have attended. There was an entire additional conference running concurrently in a separate section of the convention center called RAPID which was focused on additive manufacturing which was also full of marvels. We saw a 3D printer geared towards making microscopic prints with...

Massive Dimension, MDPH2, Pellet Head Extruder -

We are incredibly excited to have one of our extruders in a live demonstration at the upcoming Fabtech show in Chicago! The MDPH2 Pellet Head Extruder will be mounted on an ABB Robotics IRB 4600 articulated robot, in partnership with ABB for a presentation of their new RobotStudio 3D Printing PowerPac software. This software allows users to easily upload standard g-code from a conventional slicer and convert it to robot code, then view simulations and modify tool paths in an intuitive and straightforward manner.  Mounting large-format extruders to articulated robots has enabled some of the most revolutionary shifts in possibilities for 3D printing in recent...

Buckminster Fuller, one of the greatest American thinkers of the twentieth century, patented the Fly’s Eye Dome in 1965. He dubbed it an “autonomous dwelling machine” and saw it as an answer to the housing crisis of humanity- a prototype for a home that could be easily manufactured, efficiently transported, and rapidly assembled. This would make it economical, and furthermore, it would be adaptable to the needs of its inhabitants. The structure relies on tension and compression to be self-supporting and can be scaled to any size while maintaining this state of suspension. The entirety is made up of a single...
