One of our particular ambitions at Massive Dimension is to make 3D printing a more sustainable practice. Plastic waste is an enormous problem, and the myriad solutions presented thus far have helped to stem the tides but are just a beginning. Problems of new production aside, there is already a vast enough quantity of plastic present on our planet that creative recycling efforts must be introduced to find useful applications for what we have otherwise deemed garbage with an extremely long shelf-life. We now have clothing made from recycled plastic, plastic aggregate substituted into concrete, and in several countries around...

In an effort to share more of the day-to-day activities of the MD lab with our friends and followers in the 3D printing community, we’ve set up a camera feed on our MDPH2 extruder to allow us to live stream prints through our Twitch channel! The printer, nicknamed “Potter”, is a customized SCARA movement system and fabricated aluminum print bed- the extruder also has our just-released MDMCU pneumatic auto-feeding pellet delivery system mounted on it, for those curious to see it in action.  Expect to see us go live several times a week - there may be specifically scheduled events...

Large format printers possess capabilities that have allowed us to overcome what were seen as previously insurmountable barriers in the world of 3D printing- but that is not to say they do not have their own limitations. Lest we fall prey to the “bigger hammer” fallacy, it is important to recognize that as with any tool, large format printers excel at certain tasks while actually underperforming smaller printers at others. In broad strokes, we celebrate large format printers not only for their larger build capacities but also for their speed. Even if you put a filament-driven print head on a...

Here at the MD lab, we find ourselves constantly returning to the question of how to best apply our technology in a meaningful way. Without delving too deeply into the philosophical quagmire of how to define “meaningful”, you could say we are focused on the “so what?” that is proposed by possessing the capability for large format printing. We have the technology, now what can we make with it? In the lab we are constantly using our printers to rapid prototype new designs for products, and sometimes the 3D printed parts remain in the final design, while other times they...

Advances in materials science and polymer innovations are an increasingly powerful catalyst for change in the additive manufacturing industry at this time. As 3D printing gains popularity in the industrial sector as a major means of production, a broad range of applications drives a proliferation of specialized plastics uniquely suited to various purposes. In turn, the machines performing the extrusions must be engineered to possess the versatility needed to create optimum flow rates for these different materials. Hobbyists and DIYers are also often enthusiastic about having access to a multitude of printing materials and correspondingly look for a machine that...
